We all recognize that the holidays are a time of giving, and the urge to give is a wonderful thing!

I know many of us – myself included – are uncomfortable with the ‘shop ‘til you drop’ approach to holiday giving; I’m more of a Plaid Friday than Black Friday shopper. After all, there isn’t much stuff I truly need, and the environmentally conscious among us often lean more into enoughism than consumerism.

How about volunteering your time instead?

Undaunted, They Showed Up

Last Saturday I participated in my 19th Walk to End Alzheimer’s in San Francisco, in honor and memory of my mom, Polly. I wrote about her on this blog a few months ago, as part of the content I provided for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk newsletter.

When the date for this year’s event was set for November 10th, my immediate concern was the possibility of rain. That occurred in 2013, the only time in my years with the Walk, which was pretty miserable – and it was only September! Besides fundraising, the goal is to get lots of folks out and be very visible in order to raise awareness, so good weather is key.

Every year, nineteen times as of 2018, I’ve taken a deep breath and asked lots of people I know for their money. I don’t particularly relish it, but I do it anyway because I’m passionate about ending Alzheimer’s disease, and I want to see it happen in my lifetime.
